The Zones of Regulation ® is a framework and easy-to-use curriculum for teaching students strategies for emotional and sensory self-management. By Leah Kuypers, MA, OT, Autism Specialist The Zones of Regulation is a curriculum geared toward helping students gain skills in consciously regulating their actions, which in turn leads to increased control and problem solving abilities. This zone describes a state of heightened alertness and intense feelings. After the initial introductory lessons are administered the continuing implementation lessons are delivered. The Zones of Regulation uses activities to equip children with the tools they need to regulate their actions and stay in one zone (or move from one zone to another), allowing them increased control and problem-solving abilities. Kids know the different colors, recognize their feelings and use strategies to move to Green Zone (calm down or feel okay).
